Sony makes music with Roli
UK music start-up Roli has snagged investment from CE giant Sony. The unspecified amount of funding comes from Sony’s VC unit the Sony Innovation Fund and the plan is to use the injection to expand the company’s series of connected instruments
As well as grabbing the cash, Roli – whose existing digital instruments include the Seaboard and Roli Block – will plug into Sony’s network, which should help support its plans for geographical expansion, particularly in Asia. Also in the region, the firm recently picked up investment from Japan’s Onkyo, maker of Pioneer home entertainment systems,
Last year, Roli appointed Pharrell Williams as its chief creative officer, while the artist also invested in the firm and became a co-owner, as well as coming onboard to help co-design a new generation of ‘music creation devices’.
