Twitter buys in fake news nous

Twitter has acquired UK-based Fabula AI, a startup using machine learning (ML) to help detect fake news. Twitter says it will use the acquisition to stop spam and abuse.

Fabula AI uses something called graph deep learning that enables it to analyse complex datasets “to extract signals in ways that traditional ML techniques are not capable of doing”.

“By studying and understanding the Twitter graph, comprised of the millions of tweets, retweets and likes shared on Twitter every day, we will be able to improve the health of the conversation, as well as products including the timeline, recommendations, the explore tab and the onboarding experience,” Twitter says.

The company is building a research group to focus on strategic areas such as natural language processing, reinforcement learning, ML ethics, recommendation systems, and graph deep learning.
