Putting trust into AI
The US has published guidelines for the development of artificial intelligence standards. The National Institute of Standards and Technology plan recommends that the government commits to deeper, consistent, long-term engagement in AI standards to help the country speed the pace of “reliable, robust, and trustworthy AI technology development”.
The document, https://www.nist.gov/sites/default/files/documents/2019/08/10/ai_standards_fedengagement_plan_9aug2019.pdf, aims to promote research to advance and accelerate exploration and understanding of how trustworthiness can be practically incorporated within standards and standards- related tools.
The plan also calls for greater public access to government data to enable more widespread training and use of AI technologies. In addition, it advocates further research and collaboration across scientific disciplines to increase understanding of how societal and ethical considerations can advance the development and use of standards for reliable, robust, and trustworthy AI technologies.
