The Trump administration wants Chinese telecoms company China Mobile to be banned from the US market on national security grounds. "After significant engagement with China Mobile, concerns about increased risks to US law enforcement and national security interests were unable to be resolved," says the Commerce Department.
Is this a highly targeted, clever strategy aiming to outflank China on the trade front? Unlikely. The mobile outfit snags pretty much all of its revenue in China and is unlikely to be unaffected by any ban. It has over 900m mobile subscribers on its home turf.
