Start-up World Soccer Coin is leaning on cryptocurrency to give global football a boost. Headed by former Brazilian star Ronaldinho, the company is looking to the crypto business to help it build new sports stadia, develop VR technology, found the Ronaldinho Academy, plus develop e-sports leagues.

And that stadium initiative is no small thing. WSC envisages ‘Ronaldinho Digital Stadiums’ in a huge 300 locations around the world, with construction plans already in place, it says, in Asia in countries such as VietNam, Thailand and the Philippines. All we know so far is that the new arenas will be equipped with technologies such as VR and AR to record and analyse team performances.

And where is WSC based? In a backstreet in Malta. The Maltese parliament recently passed three bills into law establishing a legal certainty for cryptocurrency firms. The government says crypto operators now have the means to operate in a fully regulated environment.

Just for the record, the European Banking Authority last week accused the country’s regulatory body of systematic failings in the enforcement of anti-money laundering rules.
