Facebook's computational propaganda role
Social media has become seriously co-opted by authoritarian regimes – in 26 countries, computational propaganda is being used as a tool of information control, according to The Global Disinformation Order report from the Oxford Internet Institute.
The researchers point to three distinct ways in which this tool is being used – to suppress fundamental human rights, to discredit political opponents, and to drown out dissenting opinion.
And Facebook remains the platform of choice for social media manipulation – in 56 countries, researchers found evidence of formally organised propaganda campaigns on Mark Zuckerberg’s baby.
“Computational propaganda has become a normal part of the digital public sphere,” the report says. “These techniques will also continue to evolve as new technologies – including artificial intelligence, virtual reality, or the Internet of Things – are poised to fundamentally reshape society and politics.”
