Why gun owners need to pay up
San Jose is looking at regulations that would require gun owners to purchase private liability insurance. Under the proposal, those unwilling to buy cover would need to pay a fee towards covering the costs of gun violence to the Californian city.
The would need to offer coverage for the accidental discharge of firearms and for acts of third parties who use the guns.
The metro believes insurance can be used to promote safe and discourage risky behaviours. Monies raised by the initiative would support policing and ambulance services in San Jose.
