Samsung Heavy Industries is partnering with Bloom Energy develop ships powered by the latter’s solid oxide tech. The two companies are looking to deliver the first large, ocean-going cargo ship powered by solid oxide fuel cells.

Bloom Energy solid oxide fuel cells generate power via an electrochemical reaction without combustion.

Currently, around four-fifths of global shipping fleet operate on heavy fuel oil, the use of which provides vessels with propulsion and auxiliary power, leading maritime transport to produce as much as 3% of global carbon emissions.
