Just two of the world’s top 10 most-surveilled cities are not in China. London is in sixth spot with 68.4 public CCTV cameras per 1,000 people, while Atlanta makes tenth with 15.6 per 1,000 people, according to Comparitech research.
The Chinese metro of Chongqing claims top spot with a metric of 168 cameras, ahead of Shenzhen on 159 – Beijing has 40 per 1,000 people. China is forecast to have one camera for every two people by 2022.
By the way, Comparitech says its finds little correlation between the number of public CCTV cameras and crime levels. “Broadly speaking, more cameras doesn’t necessarily result in people feeling safer,” it states.
