LL Bean goes blockchain
Outdoor clothing retailer LL Bean is deploying blockchain technology in its boots and coats to gain a deeper understanding of how consumers use its kit. Collected data could include wear frequency and wash cycles, and any insights gained could be channelled into product development.
“Digital, quantifiable data about how customers are actually using a product — we’ve never had that data before,” Chad Leeder, innovation specialist at the LL Bean told the WSJ.
Tech outfit Loomia will develop the circuitry to be slotted into the apparel and near-field communications will be used to collect the data, which will be stored on Ethereum, an open software platform based on blockchain technology.
The solution is suited to the task as the ledger encrypts data and allows many sources make continuous updates, says Leeder.
