Two wheels electric in India

The Indian government is looking to exempt electric vehicles such as scooters and rickshaws from registration fees. Also in the mix are plans to cut sales tax on EVs from the current 12% to 5%, while public transport tickets for electric buses in cities might be exempted.

State agency Niti Aayog – National Institution for Transforming India – is currently meeting with motorbike and scooter and manufacturers to switch to electric vehicles. The government wants to see electric models only of scooters and bikes with an engine capacity of over 150cc.

In addition, bikes and scooters used for e-commerce services will need to be electric from April 2023,

Earlier this month, the government said it wants ride-hailing outfits like Uber and Ola to convert 40% of their fleets to electric by April 2026.
