Germany looks set to get its first battery cell production plant. A new grouping comprising battery maker BMZ, Streetscooter-founder Günther Schuh and start-up TerraE, in which BMZ has a stake, is pushing ahead with the plan, with VW and Bosch also possible partners.
Talks are reportedly underway with Ford to build the new operation on the site of one of the car maker’s former facilities in Cologne. Other possible locations include ex-open cast mining operations in North-Rhine Westfalia.
The 8Gw project would require an estimated €1.2bn to get to full production of car battery packs, with state-funding assured.
