Facebook buys in fake talent
Facebook has acquired London-based Bloomsbury AI to help it tackle its fake news problems. The social network says Bloomsbury has significant expertise in machine reading and understanding unstructured documents in natural language.
Facebook adds that the move – which may have cost it as much as $30m – boosts will help it further understand natural language and its applications.
Bloomsbury AI says it is developing machine reading methods that understand written text to answer questions about its explicit content, across a broad range of domains, as well as working on reasoning methods that can infer answers from text that are not explicitly stated.
Facebook is a major enabler of fake news, according to recent research, with its advertising-led business model enabling it to win big by supporting fake.
