Oakland has become the third US metro to ban the use of facial recognition technology by the city, including the police force. The move follows earlier prohibitions by San Francisco and Somerville, Massachusetts.

Oakland has now blocked its employees from obtaining, requesting, accessing, or using face recognition technology, or any data collected from the technology.

US online activist group Fight for the Future is calling for a ban on facial recognition surveillance. The organisation has launched a website – BanFacialRecognition.com – that connects users to lawmakers so they can ask them to ban what the group calls “a threat to basic rights and safety”.
