Asbestos redux... via Trump
Asbestos is set to make comeback under the Trump administration. The US Environmental Protection Agency has decided not to have a complete ban on the proven carcinogen (though 55 countries do have such a prohibition) but instead to evaluate different uses of asbestos.
In fact, the EPA’s new risk evaluation process, which came into effect in July, no longer considers it necessary to determine the effect of substances in the air, ground, or water in its assessments, which gives asbestos a huge amount on wiggle room.
However, the most recent data shows 40,000 asbestos-related deaths in the US every year.
And the President’s take? Asbestos is ‘100% safe, once applied’.
In his book, The Art of the Comeback, Trump said asbestos-related health risks were part of a gangster conspiracy, on the sound basis that ‘it was often mob-related companies that would do the asbestos removal’.
Some are supportive of this stance. Such as Russian-based asbestos maker Uralasbest whihc stated in a recent Facebook post that ‘Donald is on our side’. So happy is the company that it adorns its pallets of the product with a Trump-faced stamp of approval.
