Clinic tackles bitcoin addiction

A UK hospital has launched a rehab programme for those afflicted with bitcoin addiction. Castle Craig Hospital already runs courses dealing with drug, alcohol and gambling problems and has now rolled out a new programme to treat those having issues with cryptocurrencies.

Treatment at Castle Craig residential clinic involves intensive therapies ranging from the 12 Steps, cognitive behavioural therapy, trauma, psychiatric and complementary therapies.

The hospital says cryptocurrency users can get hooked by the volatile fluctuation of prices online which creates a high when buying or trading a ‘winning’ currency.

“The high risk, fluctuating cryptocurrency market appeals to the problem gambler,” says Chris Burn, a gambling therapist at Castle Craig Hospital. “It provides excitement and an escape from reality. Bitcoin, for example, has been heavily traded and huge gains and losses were made. It’s a classic bubble situation.”
