The illusion of Facebook
Facebook users can’t stop their data being used for targeted messaging. Rather that actual control, the social network creates a mere illusion of control over location-related ads, according to a report from US computer science researchers at USC.
Facebook claims that people will only see ads based on their recent location if location services are enabled on their phone, but that claim is false, says one of researchers, Aleksandra Korolova. She points out that “exercising all provided location controls will not stop the company from going to great lengths to obtain and use location data for advertising”.
She adds, “The locations that a person visits and lives in reveal a great deal about them. Their surreptitious collection and use in ad targeting can pave way to ads that are harmful, target people when they are vulnerable, or enable harassment and discrimination.”
