Sportsnet is partnering with Canadian beer brand Molson to roll out a 360 virtual reality initiative to broadcast NHL hockey games in VR for the first time. Audiences can watch games live on Sportsnet.ca and via the Sportsnet app custom VR viewfinders, available in select cases of Molson Canadian product across Canada. The first game on the platform with the Calgary Flames v Vancouver Canucks is scheduled for February 18.

There will be three VR cameras deployed during each game to deliver both live hockey action and stadium atmosphere. Audiences can also access behind-the-scenes footage from a number of NHL clubs and watch on-demand highlights.

Fox Sports last week partnered with cannounced to stream near-real-time highlights of the Super Bowl using the Fox Sports VR app for Google Cardboard and Gear VR. Audiences were able to watch a score of highlights clips via a ‘virtual suite’ on a big-screen TV or via direct wide-angle video.
