Netflix by numbers
Some 85% of Netflix’s planned $8bn content spend for 2018 is going on original television shows and films. The streaming video giant will have a total of 1,000 original content items on it platform by end-2018, with close to 450 due to debut on the service between now and the new year. The company reckons over 90% of its customers regularly consume its original programming.
The studios are reacting to those Netflix metrics. Disney is terminating its film agreement with the company next year and will instead channel new releases those through a Disney-branded streaming offering which is set to launch in 2019.
Disney ESPN unit last month rolled out the ESPN+ streaming service featuring ESPN-branded content including live Major League Baseball, National Hockey League and Major League football games, along with boxing, golf, tennis, rugby and cricket. A subscription comes in at $4.99 per month.
