The Fortnite gaming story is so complex and narratively driven it could be mistaken for a season of Lost. Its universe is structured like a TV show, and each new season brings new challenges, outfits, themes and cosmetics. Plus the game’s DNA means players invest more in their characters inside an immersive experience in constant expansion, according to the Fortnite: Shaking the Media & Entertainment Industry from Ipsos.

“Fortnite’s cultural references span from ‘70s disco to Tarantino’s movies, from ‘90s sitcoms to viral memes,” says the report. “This is probably best demonstrated by its emotes - the funny dances characters can do inside the game. Some of the Fortnite dances are original, but the most talked about are inspired by other popular pieces of content, such as Saturday Night Fever, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Pulp Fiction and viral videos like the Backpack Kid.

The games links to celebrities such as Drake are important too. Plus DJ Marshmello’s recent concert inside the video game racked up an audience of around 10m virtual attendees.

 And while critics accuse gaming of making kids more insular, Fortnite actually increases social interaction with friends, both on and offline, according to Ipsos gamer research. It helps them develop team-working skills and, sometimes, replaces other insular behaviours, such as time spent on video streaming sites or playing alone.
