UK insurer LV= has launched a car insurance service designed solely for electric vehicles, a product it claims as the first of its kind. The policy provides vehicle recovery to the nearest charge point if drivers run out of juice in the UK, while there’s also accidental damage, fire and theft cover for charging cables, wall boxes and adaptors, along with a five-year repair guarantee when using LV=’s recommended repair service.

The insurer says it will provide cover for a range of EVS, including the Smart EQ: Fortwo/Forfour, Renault Zoe/Twizy, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model S/X/3, Hyundai Ionic, Kia Soul, BMW i3, Kia Niro, and VW E Golf/Up.

LV= has also joined forces with Zap-Map, a provider of interactive maps of the UK’s 20,000 public charging points across the UK to help drivers locate chargers more easily. A majority of drivers worry about charging points, according to recent research.

“If we are to help make people feel more comfortable with the shift to electric vehicles over the next few years, then insurance must keep pace,” says the company. “Electric cars have very specific needs.”
