Uber is suing the city of New York over legislation passed last year that capped the number of ride-hailing cars allowed on streets.

While the law covered an initial 12-month period so that the regulation’s impact could be studied, it seems New York is now looking to make the cap a permanent feature of its transport strategy for fighting congestion .

The legislation, dating from August 2018, also included minimum pay requirements for drivers.

"We agree that fighting congestion is a priority, which is why we support the state's vision for congestion pricing, the only evidence-based plan to reduce traffic and fund mass transit,” states Uber.

Earlier this month, Barcelona halted ride-hailing, forcing the suspension of Uber and Cabify services in the city.
