Twitter at the crease
Twitter has rolled out its Twitter Lite platform for emerging markets. The lightweight version, essentially a mobile product, is aimed at consumers using slow networks and on limited data plans, and has been designed to load around 30% faster than regular Twitter.
The company has also slotted in a saver feature, a move which further reduces the amount of mobile data used. In this mode, users will get to see a preview of images and videos before choosing the ones they wish to load fully. Twitter reckons this can reduce data usage by up to 70%.
The Twitter Lite app is now already up and running in India, and will soon be rolled out in Indonesia, with Philippines, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico launches also in the pipeline. The Lite interface is currently supported in six Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and Kannada.
The company has cut a deal with Vodafone India to promote Twitter Lite to customers, leveraging the platform’s ability to deliver match and team information on hugely popular Indian Premier League T20 cricket
Twitter believes India offers a huge growth opportunity as just one-fifth of the country’s social media users are estimated to be on its platform.
