The Pentagon has put a stop on defence personnel wearing fitness trackers on sensitive bases and in war zone areas. The government fears that such wearables, along with a number smartphone applications, will reveal their locations.

“These geolocation capabilities can expose personal information, locations, routines, and numbers of DOD personnel, and potentially create unintended security consequences and increased risk to the joint force and mission,” the Pentagon said in a memo obtained by the AP.

However, it will be left to military leaders to determine whether troops under their command can use GPS functionality on their devices, based on the security threat.

The Pentagon will provide cybersecurity training that demonstrates the risks posed by trackers and other mobile devices.
