The Brexit app for EU citizens living in the UK won’t work on Apple iPhones on launch. The app, which has been designed to help people from the EU with applying to remain in the UK, will only function on Android devices despite the government being aware of the issue for months.
Users will need to scan passport chips using their smartphones to verify their identities, something that can’t be done on an iPhone. That’s bad news for a lot of people as iPhones have an estimated 45% smartphone market share in the UK.
The government is blaming Apple for the problem as the company only allows use of the chip for Apple Pay transactions for both security and commercial reasons.
