Snapchat makes TV
Snapchat is releasing a batch of exclusive TV shows ranging from drama and comedy through to mystery, horror and documentaries.
All programming has been designed for Snapchat – and thus the smartphone – shot in vertical format and with episodes running to around five minutes a pop. Snap has lured creative and production talent from the likes of Zero Dark Thirty, Riverdale and Friday Night Lights to its Snapchat Originals roster.
The company says its existing content is viewed on a daily basis and that it plans to lean on a 24-hour release cycle for each series to keep audiences coming back. Series will stretch up to 12 episodes.
Snap runs six-second ads in its current shows and will use the same format for Snap Originals. The programming will also feature Show Portals, enabling viewers to step inside scenes to experience from the inside using augmented reality.
The first three Snap Originals are already up and running in the shape of docu-drama Endless Summer, and dramas Class of Lies and Co-Ed.
