Now Snapchat is making moves on gaming. The social media platform has launched its Snap Games feature that enables users to play multiplayer games without the need to download software.

Snapchat also has its first in-house game, Bitmoji Party, which players can get to via the chat function of the app. Users can chat with each other on Snapchat throughout the game, though they are only able to play with their contacts on the platform.

The company Snap is aiming to garner revenue via six-second ads slotted into games. In-app purchases may come into play later.

"Friendship is more than just the things you chat about,” says Will Wu, head of Snap Games. “Friendship is also about experiences you have together.”

“The app has evolved from a simple photo-sharing app to a multi-billion dollar media machine, combining video, celebrity, ecommerce, immersive virtual and augmented reality – to name but a few – and now gaming,” says Josh Krichefski, CEO at MediaCom UK. This isn’t a cry for help from the company, but rather a clever move to keep users engaged in different ways in a bid to perhaps become the most social of all the social media platforms.”
