Smart street lighting is increasingly being recognised by cities as a first step toward the development of a smart city. In addition, smart parking systems, mobility solutions, air quality monitoring, and smart waste are also becoming common deployments, according to the latest Smart City Tracker report from Navigant Research.

The research outfit says it has identified 355 smart city projects across 221 cities around the world. There are initiatives in all regions, with recent surges of interest in North America and Australia, a further acceleration of the Indian smart cities programmes, and continued development across other markets.

“The number of smart city strategies and projects being developed has grown substantially, and cities continue to achieve higher levels of integration among technology-driven city services and solutions,” says Navigant. “Multi-sector deployments that span several industries are becoming more and more commonplace in recently announced smart city initiatives.”
