Power trucking

Siemens is looking to trial its eHighway initiative in the German state of Hesse using a 10km overhead contact line to supply power to electric trucks. The tram-like project will provide electricity to the power trains of hybrid electric-diesel trucks on a stretch of the A5 autobahn.

"Our technology is an already existing and feasible alternative to trucks operating with internal combustion engines," says Roland Edel, CTO of Siemens’ mobility division.

"Construction of the system will demonstrate the feasibility of integrating overhead contact systems with a public highway," says Gerd Riegelhuth, head of transport at the Hessen Mobil public agency. "The system will be used for real transport networks, and prove the practicality of climate-neutral freight transport in the urban region of Frankfurt."
