Self-driving outfit Waymo will launch the first commercial  robo-taxi service in the US before the year-end. The former Google autonomous vehicle tech subsidiary has already notched up 10m miles on-road driving long, as well as 5bn simulated miles.

The company rolled out its limited early rider programme in the city of Phoenix in April with over 400 riders using the self-driving service. Waymo says their feedback has helped it understand ‘how fully self-driving cars fit into their daily lives’.

“We’re learning a lot about the questions passengers have for their driver when the driver is the car itself,” says Waymo. “We’re building systems to let riders ask questions or get assistance at any time with the tap of a button inside our vehicle or through our app.”
