France targets Facebook's algorithms

Facebook should give governments greater access to its algorithms, according to a new official report. In addition, regulators should be able to audit the social network’s internal policies, says the study, which was written by a former Google executive in France and commissioned by President Macron.

“The inadequacy and lack of credibility in the self-regulatory approach adopted by the largest platforms justify public intervention to make them more responsible,” the report concludes.

The French government is planning to roll out legislation that would create a duty of care for social-media firms so that they would need to moderate inflammatory speech published on their networks.
