Bots for vinyl
Universal Music has launched a new vinyl service that enables consumers to get music recommendations and purchase releases using Facebook Messenger bots. Users can sign up for the new offering via Universal’s The Sound of Vinyl online shop and create a ‘taste profile’ based on their reactions to recommendations they receive from the bot.
The Sound of Vinyl carries around 20,000 titles, both from its own and rival catalogues and is aimed at hardcore music fans. The focus will be on deluxe re-issues.
US vinyl record sales spiked 3.1% to 9.35 million units in the first nine months of 2017, according to Nielsen Music, which also reported that the format now accounts for almost 14% of all physical album sales in the market.
And the top-selling vinyl album to date? That’s The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, some 50 years after its release.
