UK-based music tech start-up Roli has appointed Pharrell Williams as its chief creative officer. The company says the artist, who is also investing in the firm and will be a co-owner, will help co-design a new generation of ‘music creation devices’.

Roli’s Seaboard musical instrument is its take on the piano keyboard, with white and black keys replaced with a continuous, touch-responsive surface. The company’s palm-sized Lightpad Block is a surface for sonic control, able to recreate the sounds of drums, cellos, flutes, and hundreds of other instruments.

Roli has released the free Happy by Pharrell Studio pack in its Noise app which lets users play around with the vocals, beats, and bass lines of the artist’s track Happy app.
