Flight goes electric

MIT engineers have developed a plane able to fly without propellers or turbines. The aircraft is powered by electro-aerodynamic propulsion, taking advantage of ‘ionic wind’, the same principal as for bladeless fans.

First deployments could include short-range, small-payload drone flights, while the research team believes the technology could be used as an assistor on jet passenger planes to eliminate drag and boost fuel efficiency.
