Microsoft is warning people off The Daily Mail due to fake news. MS tells users of its Edge browser that the Mail Online website rates just one out of five for credibility and “generally fails to maintain basic standards of accuracy and accountability”.

The warning is produced by NewsGuard, an outfit founded by newspaper people to combat fake news. Microsoft joined forces with the initiative as part of its Defending Democracy project aimed at protecting democratic campaigns around the world against hacking, increasing political advertising transparency online, exploring tech solutions to protect electoral processes, and countering state-sponsored computational propaganda and junk news.

NewsGuard says it operates a ‘SWAT team’ of analysts operates to identify suddenly trending purveyors of unreliable news among sites the outfit has yet to rate and warn users about them in real time.

“Our goal is to give everyone the information they need to be better informed about which news sources they can rely on—or can’t rely on,” says NewsGuard.
