Germany’s postal service has released a stamp to commemorate the 200th birthday of Karl Marx. The design, commissioned by Deutsche Post from Munich visual comms artists Thomas Mayfried, is based on an image of Marx by photographer John Mayall from 1875.

“Marx's work had a tremendous historical impact,” the German finance ministry said of the stamp’s release. “His ideas on capitalism became the basis for virtually all social-democratic, socialist and communist movements in the world. After the collapse of communist regimes in Eastern Europe from 1989/90, Marxism seemed to be over. In the aftermath since 2008, Karl Marx has been receiving renewed global attention.”
