e-Trucks drive the Autobahn

Germany has rolled out its first trial stretch of overhead power-line Autobahn for e-trucks. Initially, five hybrid (electric/diesel) trucks will travel along a €15m, 5kms stretch on the A5 between the cities of Frankfurt and Darmstadt, charging batteries from overhead lines. Any surplus power generated during braking will fed back into the grid.

The public eHighway trial follows a number of years of private tests, and the government is now looking to develop two more stretches of motorway in Schleswig-Holstein und Baden-Württemberg.
