Facebook is taking its new London incubator deeply communitarian for its first edition. The social network has opened the doors on its Ldn-Lab hub in the West End with an initial intake of seven firms joining the 12-week programme.

“We’re looking for start-ups that focus on something we really care about – community,” said when it made its call-out recently. “Your whole company should be dedicated to forming new communities that couldn't exist before and uniting people around a certain topic, passion or cause.”

So to nutrition. Among the initial Ldn-Lab intake is Olio which works to connect neighbours with each other as well as with shops to share surplus food, rather than toss it in the bin. And there’s also Tabl, a food community of independent producers, hosts, chefs and home cooks offering recipes, stories, craft products and ‘experiences’.

Also in the cohort are Teacherly (education planning), Goodgym (athletic volunteering), Sharecare (community care), Mush (connecting mothers) and Rabble (exercise as games).
