French energy giant EDF is looking to play big in the electric vehicle charging business. The company is setting its sights on a 30% market share in EV charging in France, Belgium, Italy and the UK, with a view to powering up 600,000 vehicles by 2022.

EDF’s Sodetrel subsidiary is looking to install 75,000 European charging stations by 2022, while also delivering access for its energy customers to 250,000 terminals operated by third party providers.

The company faces serious competition here. France’s Total has acquired Dutch charging provider PitPoint as well as French operator G2mobility, while Shell picked up charge point outfit NewMotion, also from the Netherlands.
