startup to offer real-time video of anywhere on earth

Start-up watch: EarthNow has just picked up a chunk of financing from the likes of Airbus, Softbank and Bill Gates and is looking to deploy a large constellation of imaging satellites to provide real-time, continuous video of pretty much anywhere on earth.

The advanced satellites’ output won’t be short on applications, according to EarthNow. The company sees it being used to spy on illegal fishing in the act, watch hurricanes and typhoons evolving, detect forest fires the moment they start, watch volcanoes, track migrating whales, help smart cities become more efficient, provide on-demand data about crop health, and observe conflict zones.

And all that is a major step-up, reckons EarthNow CEO Russell Hannigan. “With existing systems, users can see only what has happened in the past,” he says. “With EarthNow’s constellation of satellites, you will see events unfold as they happen in real time.”
