An anthem of cruise ship pollution

An anthem of cruise ship pollution

Cruise line operator Carnival Corporation and its Princess Cruise Lines unit have been slapped with a $20 million penalty in the US for environmental infringements, including for dumping plastic into the ocean.

Take note that Princess Cruise Lines has already had to stump up $40m for polluting behaviour –so will the latest financial smacking make any difference?

After all, this is a company that thinks simply fixing up ships shortly before any environmental inspections and falsifying training records is OK. It has also used a ‘magic pipe’ device that bypasses a ship's water treatment system to dump oil waste directly into the water.

Carnival’s CEO told a judge that he was “extremely personally disappointed” the firm had such problems.

The judge said the environment needs to be a core corporate value “and I hope and pray it becomes your daily anthem”.

Now Carnival will have to pay for 15 annual audits and it says it will restructure its corporate compliance efforts. The court has also imposed deadlines on the restructuring effort and failure will be charged at $10m a day.
