EV trucks backslide
Leading Chinese EV automaker BYD has shelved plans to open an electric truck plant in Canada. The company says there is currently no business case for the project, though it may revisit it in the future.
BYD has been moving and shaking in Canada and is able to boast more electric buses on the country’s roads than any other supplier. It has won every single competitive bid for e-buses in Canada and recently snagged an order from Toronto Transit Commission.
BYD, which is backed by Warren Buffett, this week unveiled a fully electric version of its top-selling Tang SUV at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The EV has a range of up to 600 km, with a fast recharge of 30 minutes.
e-takeout: BYD clearly sees buses as a better Canadian trucks right now, which makes sense. That truck plant may well get a green light next year as Ontario’s newly elected administration is largely expected to unveil a new EV programme that could bolster trucks.
