China's AI lead

Half of the world’s artificial intelligence unicorns are based in China, making the Middle Kingdom the leading global AI market, according to according to CB Insights.

Facial recognition start-up SenseTime is the largest unicorn with a valuation of $4.5bn, while another facial recognition firm, Face++, had a good 2018, picking up $600bn-plus in funding.

Other leading Chinese AI unicorns are Yitu Technology, 4Paradigm, Momenta and Pony.ai.

The Beijing area of Zhongguancun currently boasts 10 top AI laboratories, among them Baidu Research, Didi AI Labs and Microsoft Research Asia, all of which are backed by major concerns.
