Calm and the unicorn

What’s a meditation app worth? Make it $1bn if it’s Calm.com which is now a player in a mindful segment dominated by Mindspace.

It probably helps that Calm has a clutch of investors such as Ashton Kutcher’s Sound Ventures and Hollywood talent and literary outfit Creative Artists Agency, along with the more mundane likes of Insight Venture Partners.

Calm reports that the app has been downloaded more than 40m times. Also that it’s profitable. It claims the recent financing round that gave it the $1bn valuation makes it the world’s first ‘mental health unicorn’.

“Our vision is to build one of the most valuable and meaningful brands of the 21st century,” says co-founder Michael Acton Smith.
