Bridgestone is going to the trouble of reinventing the wheel. The rubber manufacturer has unveiled the Air Free Concept wheel/tyre for bicycles which has done away with the need for a pump-up to deliver that smooth ride. The company says its new technology eliminates the need for tyres to be inflated to support the weight of the bike and its rider by using a new spokes structure stretching along the inner sides of the Air Free Concept wheel.
In addition, the resins used in the new on-the-road system will enable the design of next-generation bicycles ‘which have never been seen before’, according to Bridgestone.
The company is currently conducting feasibility studies with a view to bringing the Air Free Concept wheel/tyre to market by 2019.
