Into the Barça Hub
FC Barcelona is planning to develop a sports innovation hub with a view to operating the ‘number-one centre of sporting innovation in the world’. The Barça Innovation Hub will comprise five key pillars – medical services and nutrition, sports performance, team sports, technology and social science – and aim to develop research projects, create new products and pass on learnings across sectors. The hub will operate under Barça’s long-standing ‘More than a club’ tagline.
FC Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu says the Barça Innovation Hub will share the knowledge that the club has already succeeded in generating via its existing FCB Universitas innovation platform. This covers areas such as hydration and nutrition initiatives, customised physical recovery programmes, plus big data analysis. He adds that while these projects have been designed for elite athletes, they will now also benefit the general public.
“We want to construct an ecosystem to promote knowledge and innovation, an open culture of collaboration, working strictly with leading brands, universities, research centres and emerging businesses around the world,” he says. “We want to take advantage of collective intelligence and individual talent to implement a culture of continual improvement.”
Bartomeu adds that Barça Innovation Hub will “create value not just for FC Barcelona but also for other sports, markets and industries”.
The club will unveil the project at its Camp Nou stadium on 22 March.
