Amazon goes studio

Amazon is looking to become a full-blown film studio with the release of Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel in December. The online retail giant will roll out the movie without a distribution partner and will have developed the project from financing through to production and placing the flim in cinemas, reports Variety.

Amazon starting acquiring and producing films two years ago and is adopting a different model from rival Netflix. The latter is busy making lots of TV and film-style content to debut on its online streaming platform, while Amazon prefers to release them in theatres before pushing them onto its Prime service.
