A fleet of 150 fully electric black cabs has hit London streets. Users call up the taxis via the Sherbet Ride app.

The future-proofing move comes ahead of the introduction of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone in Central London in April 2019. Vehicles entering the space will need to comply with new exhaust emission standards or pay a daily fee.

Sherbet head Asher Moses expects the rollout to give his company an edge over Uber which he believes has harmed the UK capital’s taxi trade.

“The service we launch today aims to help the London black taxi industry reclaim its Central London heartland through the offer of an environmental, tech-enabled passenger-focused service,” he says.

Moses adds, “No ride-sharing app can compete with customer service offered by a London black taxi, but technology has fractured the market.”

e-takeout: Those black cabs will have a real edge with electric. Cities outside the UK are smitten with the vehicles – Paris has approved hybrid London-style taxis, which will roll out in early-2019, while Hamburg is currently trialling fully electric models.
