Amazon Echo loses smarts

Amazon's lead in the smart speaker market is ebbing away. The company’s Echo gear will slip below two-thirds of US smart speaker sales next year for the first time next year – and its share will drop further as rivals grow, according to eMarketer.

Google Home is the big gainer, snagging 31% of smart speaker users in 2019, while the likes of Sonos One and Apple HomePod will pick up speed.

But for all their tech might, neither Amazon Echo nor Google Home have been able to penetrate China which will have an estimated $23bn smart speaker market this year.  One barrier is the language and its more than 100 dialects. So look out instead for Alibaba's Tmall Genie X1 and Xiaomi's Mi AI speakers to make the running.
