Original content on Netflix is set to outnumber licensed programming starting in October 2019, according to research from Parrot Analytics and S&P Global Market Intelligence’s Kagan. One of the company’s top strategic goals is to have half of its content come from in-house.

Content spending for Netflix, Amazon and Hulu is forecast to continue to grow at double-digit rates.

Competition is set to tighten, though.

"The future for the industry is likely to be even more crowded and the winners are still unknown," said Deana Myers, research director, S&P Global Market Intelligence. "Walt Disney is expected to debut its SVOD service in 2019 and its proposed buy of the studio and libraries of 21st Century Fox will add a vast amount of content to this service. Other anticipated SVOD launches include those by Apple and Warner Media.”

Close to 500 original scripted TV series were released in 2018, with video streamers accounting for the biggest chunk for the first time.

Online platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Sundance Now churned out one-third of the year’s output, just edging out US broadcast cable networks, according to FX Networks metrics. Online platforms upped their scripted production by around one-quarter last year.
